On April 25th, I decided to lower advertized bandwidth by 10x. This caused some confusion and hesitation as the figures were very, very low. And generally, they are read as maximum transfer use. Somewhat confusingly, I wrote those more as the minimum that I felt I could offer with certainty.
There were a couple of reasons that led to the change. One involved my initial implementation of IPv4 using Wireguard and being capped at about 80Mbit/sec. I didn't want to advertize more bandwidth than was possible, so I set the bar low.
Now that IPv4 has no additional overhead over IPv6 (more or less,) there's no concerns about raising speeds. Freya is capable of around 400Mbit/sec forwarding. Past that point, I'll need to upgrade (probably to the same hardware as my hosts.) At the moment, the connection is a modest 100Mbit/sec and barely utilized.
I was given a ballpark figure from Ardent Networks for gigabit, and I'm quite pleased with it. So I have a plan now to scale network as needed. First from 100Mbit/sec to about 400Mbit/sec, then to gigabit.
Gigabit works out fairly well with my expectation of having about 540GB of VPS memory at maximum capacity.
A gigabit connection should offer about 330TB/month of transfer. Thus at maximum use, I feel pretty comfortable offering 0.5TB/GB, which works out to be 270TB per month if all 540GB of VPS use the advertized amount. Even if it actually works out to 560GB+ of servers, it's still at least advertizing less than the maximum sustained possible amount. And this assumes that I get to maximum capacity at all, which I am not sure. These figures are half of Vultr+DigitalOcean's offerings, and much less than others, but should be realistic figures for me to work with, and for my customers (prospective or current) to expect.
Of course, I don't want to approach 270TB per month on a gigabit connection (as individual speeds would get quite low,) but I know from experience that many will be under and a few will be over such figures, which is fine. And I could probably bump things up to 2Gbit/sec if I really had to, and costs would still be alright for the 1/3 cabinet. (Now one thing I didn't mention is symmetric forwarding speeds, which I think are still possible.)
